Rank and Pension of Soldiers Killed on Active Service

Early Day Motion [EDM 1053]
Rank and Pension of Soldiers Killed on Active Service

Sergeant Matthew Telford of the Grenadier Guards was promoted to that rank in June 2009.

In November of that same year, Sergeant Telford was one of 5 British soldiers killed when a rogue Afghan policeman opened fire on them.

His wife and family will only receive a Corporal's pension since he only held his rank of Sergeant for less than a year.

However, he was killed on operations by the enemy whilst wearing three stripes of a Sergeant on active service.

Please sign the Early Day Motion petition below to support a change in the rules that deny a hero’s widow the pension she deserves.

A SHOCKING LOOK INSIDE CHINESE FUR FARMS

PETA is an animals rights organisation. PETA represents People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

When undercover investigators made their way onto Chinese fur farms recently, they found that many animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them. When workers on these farms begin to cut the skin and fur from an animal's leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals who struggle too hard to allow a clean cut.
When the fur is finally peeled off over the animals' heads, their naked, bloody bodies are thrown onto a pile of those who have gone before them. Some are still alive, breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly. Some of the animals' hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they are skinned. One investigator recorded a skinned raccoon dog on the heap of carcasses who had enough strength to lift his bloodied head and stare into the camera.

WARNING! THE VIDEO IS OF A HORRIFIC NATURE AND I RECOMMEND YOU ONLY WATCH IT IF YOU DOUBT THE TRUTH OF WHAT IS WRITTEN HEREIN. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Pledge to go fur-free at PETA.org.

Before they are skinned alive, animals are pulled from their cages and thrown to the ground; workers bludgeon them with metal rods or slam them on hard surfaces, causing broken bones and convulsions but not always immediate death. Animals watch helplessly as workers make their way down the row.

Undercover investigators from Swiss Animal Protection/EAST International recently toured fur farms in China's Hebei Province, and it quickly became clear why outsiders are banned from visiting. There are no regulations governing fur farms in China—farmers can house and slaughter animals however they see fit—meaning miserable lives and excruciating deaths. The investigators found horrors beyond their worst imaginings and concluded, "Conditions on Chinese fur farms make a mockery of the most elementary animal welfare standards. In their lives and their unspeakable deaths, these animals have been denied even the simplest acts of kindness."

On these farms, foxes, minks, rabbits, and other animals pace and shiver in outdoor wire cages, exposed to driving rain, freezing nights, and, at other times, scorching sun. Mother animals, who are driven crazy from rough handling and intense confinement and have nowhere to hide while giving birth, often kill their babies after delivering litters. Disease and injuries are widespread, and animals suffering from anxiety-induced psychosis chew on their own limbs and throw themselves repeatedly against the cage bars.

The globalization of the fur trade has made it impossible to know where fur products come from. Skins move through international auction houses and are purchased and distributed to manufacturers around the world, and finished goods are often exported. China supplies more than half of the finished fur garments imported for sale in the United States. Even if a fur garment's label says it was made in a European country, the animals were likely raised and slaughtered elsewhere—possibly on an unregulated Chinese fur farm.

Because a fur's origin can't be traced, anyone who wears any fur at all shares the blame for the horrific conditions on Chinese fur farms. The only way to prevent such unimaginable cruelty is never to wear any fur. Take PETA's pledge to be fur-free today!

Consumers everywhere need to know the truth about fur. When people learn that millions of innocent animals are beaten, boiled, hanged, and electrocuted for their fur every year ... when they learn that every fur coat, lining, trim, or fur cat toy represents the intense suffering of several dozen animals and when they learn that furriers intentionally mislabel fur as not taken from dogs and cats or as fake ... then every decent human being will want to go FUR-FREE.

You can make a donation to help in the fight against this cruel trade. Here is the web address of PETA.Org (copy & paste into your browser)

Tell all your friends about these evil farmers and help bring pressure to force the Chinese government to take immediate action to outlaw such barbaric practices and -
NEVER WEAR FUR AGAIN !!!!!!!!!!

Petition to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

In the UK any citizen has the right to create an online petition to the Prime Minister on a subject of importance to the petition creator and anyone else who may feel moved to support the aims and objectives of the said petition. A deadline for signatories is set and upon reaching that deadline the Prime Minister has undertaken to reply by e-mail to everyone who signed the petition. The one that has prompted me to post these details on my blog has been submitted by Nick Aldworth and concerns the interference by this Government in the provision of police pay, conditions of service and pensions. Whilst this primarily affects new recruits it can, and should be, perceived as the thin end of the wedge. How long will it be before our pensions are modified or diminished?

This is the actual wording of the petition;

Since 1979, the police have had an effective and fair means of negotiating their pay through the Edmund-Davies formula. This recognised the unique status of police officers and their inability to take industrial action to secure fair pay deals. The Home Office are now seeking to undermine this agreement and create disturbance and unrest in the police service.

The petition calls upon the Prime Minister to stop the Home Office from interfering in the negotiation of police pay. As of today there are 26,798 signatories and it is growing rapidly. The deadline for signatures is 3rd February 2008. I believe, most sincerely, that we retired officers owe it to our serving brothers and sisters to support them in their campaign to stop any further erosion of their pay and conditions of service. If you share my views I invite you to add your name to the list of signatories by clicking on the link below or copying and pasting this link into your browser. It requires a UK postcode, however if you're an expatriate, you're in an overseas territory, a Crown dependency or in the Armed Forces without a postcode, you can still vote by selecting from a list of appropriate options;
